The piece was created by Rachel Whiteread for a charity auction organised by the Prior Weston PTA in support of the Prior Weston School in London. This was the catalogue.

Charity Box has been described as being reminiscent of those used in the Embankment installation she created in 2005/6; but this is a stretch; those 14,000 transluscent, white polyethylene boxes were stacked in various ways; a very large installation in the Turbine Hall at the Tate Modern.

Charity Box was cast in plaster, and has only the method of manufacture in common.
